WF Conference

Workforce of the Future Conference 2017

The 2017 Workforce of the Future Conference highlighted the need for continuous learning at Kaiser Permanente. Constant change is the new normal as we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which integrates work with rapidly changing technology such as artificial intelligence. Our challenge: Adapt to new technologies and evolving work processes to grow jobs and improve health. We need to be able to work with diverse teams and engage with our communities. Inspired by the morning panel, participants developed eight themes for 2018 Workforce of the Future initiatives, including accelerating apprenticeships and experimenting with new learning approaches such as reverse mentoring.

UpSkill America Image

Upskill America

President Obama’s Upskill initiative is focused on realizing the full potential of America’s workforce by empowering Americans with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages. As a part of the Upskill initiative, Kaiser Permanente is taking steps in preparing the workforce for the future of health care, which includes our customized and dynamic LHH online career portal, including self-assessments, career exploration, action plan development, and career management tools, as well as tools for managers to assist in employee development. We have also rolled out Critical Skills for the 21st Century, which will provide skill enhancement and digital badging for our current workforce in process improvement, digital fluency, collaboration, and consumer focus. And as part of a career mobility effort for entry level classifications, we will develop comprehensive career upgrade programs that will include educational plan guidance, tuition assistance, time off to train, and career counseling support.

Critical Skills Image

Critical Skills

We identified the 4 critical skills that will help prepare the KP workforce for the evolution of healthcare. We will deliver those skills through a variety of online options including existing internal resources, external resources and a dynamic adaptive learning platform.

LEAP

LEAP

With the Lifelong Education Advancement program (LEAP) we will enable employees to advance their careers by providing access to certifications and training. By working with the regions to create training positions we will develop a pool of certified, trained employees who are ready to fill new positions.

Ambulatory Nurse Residency and Care Coordination

Fifty percent of KP's nurses are now located in the ambulatory setting. Leveraging BHMT resources, NWFPD designed online modules and a facilitator's guide to support the ambulatory nurse in their expanding role. This is complemented by clinical experiences provided by the nursing in each KP Region. Care coordination is the principal function of the nurse of the future. NWFPD, BHMT and NPCS (KP National Patient Care Services) partnered with the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing to develop an online version of their state of the art curriculum. These modules are available through Health Stream.

Our Trusts

The programs of our trusts represent a shared investment by employer and employee. We believe that this shared investment yields value to the organization, its labor partners, and individual employees, and that it positively impacts employee performance and the quality and service they provide to Kaiser Permanente members.
